Social cue: Photorealism
Communication system: Visual
Cue category: Appearance
Cue Description
The appearance of the CA ranges from an extremely photorealistic appearance to a comic appearance.
Cue example
Real photo of a human being, comic figure.
Cue impact
The presence of a realistic, but not a cartoon-like ECA increases perceived anthropomorphisation of the agent (Beun et al. 2003). If using an agent created from a photorealistic image of a human, the agent should be lifelike and should have appropriate human-like communicative behavior, because the expectations towards the agents rise (McBreen, Jack 2001; Knijnenburg et al. 2016).
